Unveiled

(Drama, Angelina Maccarone, Germany 2005, 97 min, German/Farsi with German subtitles)
First shown in Graz!

The translator Fariba (Jasmin Tabatabai) is living under the threat of the death penalty in her own country Iran after being revealed, by the vice squad, to be a lesbian. Fariba is able to flee to Germany, but there her application for asylum is turned down and she is going to be deported. When a fellow inmate from Iran commits suicide, Fariba assumes his identity, and, using his temporary permit of sojourn, is re-located to the province of Swabia.
There, she gets an illegal job working at a sauerkraut factory, where she is confronted by the prejudices of her co-workers, but also by the interest of Anne, who is strangely attracted to the young, introvert stranger who seems to be so uncomfortable in his own skin.

Unveiled is a heartrending look at the status of lesbians under religious oppression, and of the extremes they must go to to keep their sexual identities intact.
