Alex is a 15-year-old teenager with a secret: Raised as a girl, she has both male and female biological attributes. Alex is intersex. The film begins with the visit of friends of Alex's parents and their 16-year-old son Álvaro. Álvaro's father is a plastic surgeon, and it soon becomes clear that he has come to „help“ his friends' daughter. Alex and Álvaro feel strongly attracted to each other, which forces both of them to confront questions about their identities and their fears. Meanwhile, one of Alex's friends spreads rumors about her intersexuality around the small town. The people's fascination with the strange girl reaches new heights to the point of possible danger.
XXY is an exact, yet highly sensitive examination of beauty, „normality“, growing up and the love between children and parents. The film captivates its audience with beautiful images and impressive acting by Inés Efron (Alex) and Ricardo Darín (Kraken, Alex's father).
